Thirty-four students from The School KFI, Chennai, embarked on a five-day journey with us in the Nilgiris. Following an orientation in Kotagiri, we proceeded to Sigur, where we spent two days immersed in various activities. During our time in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, we engaged in multiple field trips and discussions with stakeholders. Topics included farming near protected areas, organic farming practices, pricing, and human-wildlife conflict. We also visited the renowned Theppekadu Elephant camp, where a veterinarian provided insights into the camp’s elephants and their caretakers. Additionally, we explored indigenous villages and learned about Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP). Our itinerary included bird watching and a visit to a local craftsman skilled in utilizing the invasive plant Lantana to craft furniture. Back in Kotagiri, the students immersed themselves in the Nilgiri Earth festival, participating in various activities such as volunteering, dancing to local music, and enjoying delicious wild honey at the honey bar setup. They also networked with other participants in the event. On the final day, they embarked on a beautiful walk in a local shola forest, taking time to connect with and appreciate nature through sensory experiences.

Overall, the immersive learning experience provided the students with valuable insights into the interconnectedness of all living beings and the importance of adopting sustainable practices to protect our planet’s precious resources. We look forward to welcoming more students to join us on this educational journey in the future.
