NNHS ran a trail to Banagudi with a small group of NNHS members on the 29th of January 2022. The day started on a gloomy note with mist and drizzle but picked up as the sun rose up in the sky. The first visitors to greet were the giant squirrels as they clambered up the tree branches. With avid birders in the group, we immediately picked up the movements of the canary flycatcher, the fulvetta and a pleasant appearance from the paradise flycatcher was a welcome sign. Many other birds also kept us company, not to mention, the leeches. The group was also intrigued by the various plants along the trail – be it shola tree species or other flowering shrubs and some time was spent educating ourselves in Botany.

As we headed towards the village, we learnt about the Kurumba traditions and beliefs around the sacred forest that Banagudi is, to them. We were also introduced to the Kurumba art form and livelihood stories from the past to the present. It was a refreshing half-day spent outside, exploring and experiencing the shola forest and we hope the year has more in store.
