The Nilgiri Natural History Society was established in 2009 by Keystone Foundation with a focus on working with people from all walks of life, towards an ecologically conscious community where people and biodiversity co-exist. The society was formally launched at Kotagiri, The Nilgiris in February 2010 by Shri Jairam Ramesh then Minister of Environment Forests and Climate Change. As a membership based society, NNHS relies on the dedication and commitment of it’s members!

The society endeavours to redefine life, nature, and humanity through an ecologically sound and socially responsible value system. It aims to permeate manifestations of actions and thought processes across all walks of life. Inspiration and imagination is core to the Nilgiri Natural History Society.

The Nilgiri biosphere reserve is a bio cultural hotspot, almost 75% of the area comes under protected areas with high levels of endemism. An estimated 20 indigenous people’s groups are ancient residents of this landscape.  Stories of co-existence and shared spaces abound in this region.

The NNHS through its conservation education, awareness and outreach activities works to tell the story of the biosphere, through experiential learning and sharing. It is a platform where indigenous elders, government servants, biologists, students, home makers, citizens from every walk of life are committed to leading a better life synchronised with Nature.
